Meet the Committee: Scott Ross on Creativity, Community, and Building the Cultural Future of Fishermans Bend
Fishermans Bend is a precinct in transition, where industry, innovation, housing, and culture are coming together to shape one of Melbourne’s most significant urban renewal areas.
As the precinct continues to grow, the Fishermans Bend Business Forum plays a key role in bringing together business, community, and industry voices to help guide its future. We are pleased to welcome Scott Ross to the Committee, bringing more than 30 years of experience across creative industries, operations, and community-focused projects.
Scott has worked across web design, creative marketing, photography, videography, retail, logistics, e-commerce, exhibition development, and exhibition installation. In his current role as Gallery Manager at Romulus Folio Gallery, he is involved in developing arts, wellbeing, and community initiatives that foster connection, creativity and participation, while also overseeing exhibition installation, gallery operations, audience engagement, and program delivery.
We spoke with Scott about his background, his motivations for joining the Forum, and the opportunities he sees ahead for Fishermans Bend.
Tell us about yourself and your work outside FBBF
I love music, art, and nature. I’ve been drumming in bands for most of my life and have always valued the sense of connection and wellbeing that music brings.
I’ve worked in the creative industries for decades across many areas including textile arts, exhibitions, creative design, web design, photography, videography, retail sales, and ecommerce. For me, it has always been a balance between work and passion, and I feel fortunate to be working in fields that I genuinely love.
Why did you join the Fishermans Bend Business Forum?
I joined FBBF to become a stronger voice for arts and community while working alongside the business community to help build the cultural and social infrastructure that will support the community as it continues to evolve.
What will you be focusing on in your role?
I look forward to contributing both the creative and technical aspects of my experience, while embracing the diverse opportunities and challenges that come with being a committee member.
What do you see as the key opportunities or challenges ahead?
One of the greatest opportunities ahead is helping shape the cultural identity of the area as it continues its transformation.
A key challenge will be ensuring that arts, culture, community and local business remain connected and embedded within that growth, creating the foundations for a vibrant, resilient and thriving precinct into the future.
What do you enjoy most about working in Fishermans Bend?
The people.
I’m continually inspired by the individuals, businesses and organisations working to shape the precinct. I also enjoy the challenge of helping build cultural infrastructure in a place undergoing such significant transition from its industrial past to its residential future.
And finally, where's the best coffee in Fishermans Bend?
As much as I love and am fuelled by coffee, and many places in Fishermans Bend do a great one, I’ll have to give this one to CBCo. Their ginger beer can’t be beaten and it has become a bit of a Fishermans Bend favourite of mine.
